Surrealism is a cultural movement that began in the early 1920s, and is best known for its visual artworks and writings. The aim was to "resolve the previously contradictory conditions of dream and reality." Artists painted (occasionally disturbing) illogical scenes with photographic precision, created strange creatures from everyday objects and developed painting techniques that allowed the unconscious to express itself.

Hospital cameras caught some sort of dark spirit looming over a patient one night. The patient died a few hours later.

Psychedelic and Vintage Animations by Richard Balzer
Based in New York, artist Richard Balzer’s obsession with praxinoscopes, camera obscuras, anamorphic mirrors, zoetropes and other optical mechanisms is manifested in his animated work on his Tumblr blog. The psychedelic and whimsical illustrations possess a vintage sensibility, which is uniquely composed with the use of a spinning disc. The  phenakistoscopes (one fo these first devices used to developed animated figures to create the illusion of motion) reveal morbid and antique designs, which mirror a mid 19th-century European fashion.
